Today on Diary of  a Boho Bride we welcome back Becki to the Blog. Last time Becki told us all about Getting Organised, her bridesmaid dresses and her DIY flower obsession. Since then she has shared with us her DIY Invitation tutorial and today she is going to be telling us all about how music is playing a BIG part in her wedding day, not only the music they play but music running throughout the day as a theme.

I’ll pass the Blog over to Becki………..

Fact: I played Maria in The Sound of Music play at my first school aged nine, the inspiration for the title of this post!
Fortunately that’s where the inspiration ends, so don’t worry I won’t be walking down the aisle to Edelweiss or yodelling part way through our vows!
But music is a big part of our lives so we thought it was about time to start planning what we are going to have on our big day and for two people who share a love for music it’s become apparent our tastes are very mixed and not at all wedding like!

And here’s where it starts..

2001 – It was the year we met.
I had progressed from 90’s pop music and all things boy band related to.. Marilyn Manson (shocking I know!)
I was also influenced by Kelly Osbourne and Sophie Ellis Bextor! I was a lost cause!
Jonny was into proper music as he puts it! All things indie and real bands that played instruments!! So he introduced me to his cousins band Embrace (who we practically followed around the country on tour a year or so later)

A month after we met, it was my 16th birthday and J bought me tickets to see Stereophonics. I was well impressed as the only band I’d seen live by that point was Boyzone!
Back then music was… well, it was a bit crap basically, but we loved it at the time and it holds massive memories for us & our friends from school.

So we decided the music for our wedding should start where it all began for us as a couple in 2001, but the thought of subjecting our family and friends to a song like Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus whilst sat eating a gorgeous meal made us think twice about how we could actually do this.

And so the idea of having CD’s as wedding favours was born and included in the song list are some little gems from that year. Each one is a reminder of our youth, a little bit of fun poked at our taste in music when we were young and carefree! Or young and drunk depending on who you ask!!

I handmade the cd cases and included a little insert card which explains the whole mad theory for our guests.

Continuing on the music theme, we have also decided to have song titles as table names and the lyrics of them are being wrapped around jam jar tealight holders. After much debate we have managed to decide on 8 songs so far which will hopefully be enough for our tables and these include songs we both love, songs which remind us of holidays and music festivals, of driving around in J’s little clapped out white clio or songs that just sum us up either lyrically or by the title.

So now to the serious bit, the actual music for the wedding itself which is, to be honest, a complete and utter mare of a job and a lot harder than I ever anticipated. Our music tastes have developed since 2001 thank god and although we have become wiser to what the music world has to offer it’s not exactly weddingy!

We are having a civil ceremony at a country manor hotel so the music will be played whilst the guests are waiting before the ceremony, as me and my girls walk down the aisle, whilst we sign the register and then for us to walk back up the aisle which is quite a lot of music to decide on.
Basically J and I put our ideas into a draft playlist on iTunes and more often than not it requires a little debate on the suitability of the song or the lyrics and then we remove it again!

So what we’ve decided on so far is..

The song I am walking down the aisle to is Songbird by Eva Cassidy.

I’ve loved this song for years, I think the lyrics are just so very simple, but so very beautiful and it says everything I’d ever want it say. The Songbird album by Eva Cassidy was number 1 in 2001, so it kinda has a very small connection there too. Also it’s a guaranteed tearjerker – as proven by moi when it was performed live at a wedding fashion show and I promptly burst into tears as soon as I heard the first verse, so embarrassing! Waterproof mascara at the ready!!

Our invitations, (which were featured on this blog as a diy tutorial recently) have the words “All You Need Is Love, Love Is All You Need” stamped onto them which is a famous Beatles song. The Beatles once stayed at our venue, Holdsworth House Hotel , so I love the connection there even though this was completely coincidental!
So as a nod to that, the top table will be named after this song and when our toastmaster announces us as Mr & Mrs Durrans we shall enter the room to this song! If you can’t remember how it goes seriously youtube it, it has a trumpet fanfare at the beginning, how camp and hopefully amusing!

Happy Planning
